Programmable Logic Controllers: Basics
This course is a comprehensive introduction to PLCs, which teaches the general principles, applicable to all PLC brands. It prepares the students to work with these devices in a variety of industrial settings and applications. The textbook uses the popular brand as the paradigm, while the lab is based on the PLC hardware, 214 CPU, and discrete and analog I/O expansion modules. The students master the . programming instructions, which are divided into six distinct categories: File level, including sequencer operation; bit level; timers and counters; word level, including add, subtract, multiply and divide; control programs; analog inputs.
Various installation, troubleshooting, start-up, and final system checkout procedures are studied and implemented. Data measurement, transducers and intelligent I/O with temperature are covered, including wiring and signal conditioning.
Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to:
- Summarize and identify the main PLC functional blocks (inputs, CPU, outputs).
- Program the PLC’s for simple basic control operations.
- Analyse the standard PLC ladder diagrams and describe the program function.
- Demonstrate connections of field wiring (input and output devices) to the corresponding PLC terminals.
- Describe the nature of analog control signals and their industrial standards.
- Use the Siemens Windows development environment (Step7-MicroWin32) to write ladder diagram PLC programs.
- Use the Siemens Windows development environment (Step7-MicroWin32) to debug and document PLC programs.
- Download PLC programs from the PC development environment into the PLC.
- Read schematic and wiring diagrams and establish the correct physical and logical relation between I/O wiring and program addressing.
- Demonstrate related computer skills in the Windows environment.

||Overview of PLC
||Review of relay circuits using AND, OR, NOT, NOR, NAND, XOR and XNOR functions, number system and Boolean Algebra.
||Learn to draw PLC ladder logic diagrams and contact symbology.
||Use programming software efficiently, identify and use mnemonics, appropriate addressing and memory management, programming, editing documentation and emulation techniques.
Downloading and uploading programs between computer and PLC systems.
||Write and demonstrate programs using program control instructions:
||Set and reset outputs
||Timers and counters
||Data Comparison and Arithmetic Functions
- Class discussions
- Formal lectures
It is mandatory for students to attend 90% of total labs and lectures.
Class timing is Daily 2 hours , Five days a week.
Marks Grading on Certificate:
Excellent – Above 90%
Very Good – 75%-90%
Satisfactory –Above 50%-60%
Submission of late assignments is unacceptable and will receive a grade of zero. However proof of medical report should be submitted in case of any medical emergency.
The style of all written work should be clear and concise. The characteristics of such a style include grammatical correctness, appropriate vocabulary, clear sentences, and logical organization. It is
the students’ responsibility to keep copies of all their work in the course.
